I've told you this one already:
When I got my first period, my father gave me one of the "best" pieces of advice I've ever got.
The first day suffering with my first period I got quite scared and depressed, thinking "Perfect, I'm going to be bleeding down there every single month until I'm so old that I won't care anymore"
That day my father called me to his room and made me sit next to him in the bed:
He: So, I've heard you're a woman now
Me: mmmmm (slight nod)
He: Don't leave any visible marks anywhere. And don't use it as an excuse to avoid going to work.
That really helped.

I know
He then gave me a lesson about how women faked the pain during those days and how they'd use the hormones as an excuse to get what they wanted.
I only wanted to cry in the bathroom.

Did he also advise you that women didn't really know their own minds
and said 'no' when they meant 'yes'?
Sorry, but he sounds a prick. What did your mother say on the subject? 'Don't listen to him - he's a prick!'?

are you suggesting that no woman ever faked the pain or used the hormones as an excuse to get what they wanted?
just playing devil's advocate for a moment there, but...
it happens every day in every town and city.
just like some men use whatever excuse they can find for poor performance.
i think Aberracion's father was offering a piece of very sound advice, if a little cold.

Well, I didn't complain about the advice
I think it's not too bad. It wasn't what I needed exactly that day, though.

maybe some
but not enough for it to be so commonly thought that they do.
And whether the advice was sound or not (debatable) I don't think in the middle of her first period was the appropriate moment

My mother wasn't in the conversation
But yes, my father is very sexist, and has clear prejudices for what a woman and a man can do. It never affected our development, I have another sister and a brother, and we were always treated in the same way. We would have to do exactly the same things at home, but if my brother did it wrong, my father would say "well, what do you expect, he's a man"
