My brother does this...He can tell you how many buttons all of our tv remotes had going back years.

I do this too but i keep forgetting the numberI count a volume button with an up and down as two, a one piece d-pad type botton as 4 etc...
i do it to mobiles too - hated the nokia 3410 because of it
