the worst thing is a black and white film with white subtitles but presented over the frames that have a majority of white in shot.
La Haine is a good example - excellent film, but unless i learn French i miss out on about 50% of the dialogue. Black and white films should have blue or red subs.

is one pixel of the opposite colour around the subs. Then whatever the background colour is, you can see them clearly.
