This is a question IT Support

Our IT support guy has been in the job since 1979, and never misses an opportunity to pick up a mouse and say "Hello computer" into it, Star Trek-style. Tell us your tales from the IT support cupboard, either from within or without.

Dull but true.
We recently changed our email software from from "MS mail" to "Notes".

I am in my lab along with my boss called Gary (who is a nasty right wing shit whom I hate) and a few students. Gary is meant to be teaching the new students a few research techniques.

Without warning our IT technician, Vijay comes in and asks for my password so that he can changed something on the server so that I can access the new "Notes" system.

"I cant tell you my password with all these people here" I say but I am already going bright red.

"S'kay" says techncian "just change it to something new in about 30 minutes"

"I'll write it down for you" says I.
I find a piece of scrap paper and write out "GARY is a CUNT"

Vijay doesnt even blink, takes paper and goes off to do his job.

about 25 minutes later I get an email from Vijay- no message just a title "YES, he is"

I'm sorry
you're going *to* Notes? It's stable, but that's about all you can say for it. Prepare to upgrade all your desktops to cope with the client. The web version is the worst mail client ever. Aaargh.

Oh dear
Notes. Brrrrrrrrr. I'd rather go back to using pigeon post than go back to Notes.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhahaha

Ha
Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Notes has to have the most unintuitive UI I have ever come across. Mind you, this was some time ago, I suppose someone with a slight idea how humans work might have redesigned it by now.

Lotus Notes sucks. And so does Outlook.
Many moons ago, I used Lotus cc:Mail. When I joined the IT department I started using Notes. It wasn't the most intuitive program I'd ever seen, but it was the only one available so I paid attention to what I was doing and learned how to use it. When the users got upgraded from cc:Mail to Outlook the IT department had been outsourced to IBM so we kept using Notes. Couldn't have IBM endorsing a competitor's product now, could we?

My next (and current) employer also used Notes and Domino, but has since moved to Outlook and Exchange. After more than a decade of using Notes, the shift to Outlook wasn't pleasant. Nothing was where I expected it to be, and the interface was profoundly unintuitive. It was as if Microsoft didn't even acknowledge the competition, and so saw no need to make it easy for people to change to its products.

In the months since the change, I've become somewhat accustomed to Outlook's foibles, and can tolerate it passing well. But it's still a pile of shit. 32KB hard limit on rules? Who the fuck can cope with such a tiny limit? And, more to the point, what fucking moron came up with the brilliant decision that the rules should be limited not by quantity, but by size?

Neither Notes nor Outlook is any good, really. But they're all there is, to all practical intents and purposes. Whichever one you're cursed with using, best of luck to you.
