I can read and write the alphabet. That's very different from being able to understand the language.Take the post above yours for example. I could transliterate that into the 'proper' writing system but that doesn't mean I can grasp what it says.
I can do the same with Greek, incidentally, but that's just because you learn pretty much all the alphabet if you do anything involving physics.
