I used to say that
To everyone who bought a Hampster in the pet shop I worked in. Some folk would get the joke, others would take it deadly serious.

Hope he wasn't on commission, being paid by performance, per per.

I believe the per-son wasn't discussing the hamster, rather the shop.
Then again my reasoning may not be per-fect.

A perspicacious observation. Personally, I'm perplexed. Perhaps the (now) original per was actually mocking a preexisting per, now ninjad out of existence, leading to a perambulating discussion of per.
Edits should be marked. Not doing so is perfidious.
