It sucks you in from other subjects.

I was once a chemist. Before I knew it, I was over to the other side and had a PhD in geology, which I'm sure wasn't part of the original plan. Damn geology.

I've been a geologist\hydrogeologist for thirty years
Best field ever. I've worked in mining, the oil business, consulting, and now do government work in cleaning up hazardous waste sites and developing new technologies.

wheere else can you get paid to look at rocks all day and then drink beer while talking about rocks at night?

Geochemists are scary to us regular hydrogeologists.
