No, it diddn't.
Usenet is a still-existing network of peer-peer servers.
Google happens to provide an archive on their server, and a shitty web-front-end.
There are many other providers.
You might as well say that oranges got absorbed into sunny delight.

Or that yenc is better than uuencode.

It's mostly not p2p tho - most isp's have their own nntp servers - they just don't have the same retention as giganews, easynews etc.
