This is a question Little Victories

I recently received a £2 voucher from a supermarket after complaining vociferously about the poor quality of their own-brand Rich Tea biscuits, which I spent on more tasty, tasty biscuits. Tell us about your trivial victories that have made life a tiny bit better.

2 quick ones.
Yesterday the missus' car was serviced. @ payup time we got the receipt & tentatively asked for the "What else needs to be fixed?" list.
Absolutely fucking nothing. Noice.
Today SWMBO (figure it out) went to dentist for a 'scrape and clean'. Upon her returning home I asked how much said procedure cost and then the "What extra did they want to do next time so's they could make a payment on their boat?" question.
SFA. Yay!

Don't
My car goes in tomorrow for a two year service: £450 before the 'other issues' even come into play!!! Am dreading it already, am running out of kidneys to sell.

Or a Haynes manual?

Even with a Haynes manual, modern cars are almost impossible to work on
I used to do all my own vehicle maintenance. Now, I barely lift the bonnet, except to top up the washer bottle.

I firmly believe that there is a department, at the end of the design chain, whose sole responsibility is to ensure that NOTHING is user-servicible. I imagine a conversation like this:

"Sir! Sir! We've located a nut that a customer could actually undo!"

"This is serious, Atkins. Quickly, put a bracket next to it, so there's no room to move the spanner, and while you're at it, swap the nut for something with seven sides and a pentagonal hole in the middle. If the customer can get to these spark-plugs without dropping the entire engine block, it's our jobs on the line!"

Really?
My car's not that old ('03) and I'm planning to change the oil, the coolant, sparkplugs, brake pads, discs and drums.

Having said that I am taking it to a friend's garage where there's a pit etc. Which will make life easier. If I had to do it on the road then I'd probably pay just to save the hassle.

I haven't serviced a car in a while, looking at the Haynes manual has firmly convinced me that electric cars are the way forward. No oil changes, no sparkplug changes, brakes wear out more slowly because you're using regenerative breaking etc. etc.

I can easily
do the oil change/filter, coolant, plugs & air filter on my '02 Rodeo & have done in the past. Tho I need to take it somewhere to do the timing and tune it as when I got it converted to autogas they put whizzbang extractors in that need thermal settings.(?)
The missus' factory autogas Falcon ('07 I think) is another beast altogether. I wouldn't touch it without a BSc (Comp. Sci). Even the sump plug isn't where (I think) it should be!

OK, I'm exaggerating a bit
You *can* still change plugs, oil etc. But a lot of things I used to do now require a computer diagnostics machine, special non-standard tools and/or just far more time and hassle than you'd expect.

And I maintain my belief in the design department...

Kinda like
a reverse-Ikea?

The former Mr Quar once spent an entire afternoon taking the dashboard off, looking for the most dangerous part of the car
He'd heard it was the nut behind the steering wheel.

Probably
But then I am a fat lazy bugger and carrying the kids and the shopping would become precarious over longer distances.

I see why that bloke called Gwixxypixl or whatever keeps reposting your QOTWs. Is this in some sort of code?
(, Wed 16 Feb 2011, 11:39, closed)
Really?
What 'cause I can be a bit obtuse & I use some acronyms?
Honestly doesn't make much sense to me really - it's not like he even edits or comments to be funny. Just copypasta.
