Shoeless Joe
Despite having been able to tie laces from an early age I once sat down to tie my shoes before setting off to work and couldn't remember how to do it.

It was only a fraction of a second, I remember having a minor panic that I didn't know how to do it before just doign it on autopilot but for that brief moment I thought I was going mental.

5t.

Is your name inspired by Excession btw? (Iain M Banks)
If so, cracking book - one of my very favourites!

If not, well, where is it from?

You would be quite right and yes it is. Just realised that answer covers both points (name inspiration) and the fact it is a good book without being specific in the order but you get the idea.

Good Book (And not in the bible sense) High Five!
Loved his last book too; Surface Detail.

Similarly.
I'd for years been slinging my (heavy) bag over my left shoulder.
I decided one day to put it over my right shoulder, and it took me ages to get it right.

It felt so 'wrong'.

Agree. I had to carry two rucksacks last week, helping a mate out and the one on the left shoulder just felt wrong. However, putting one rucksack over both shoulders is fine so I don't get it. Weird body.
