Did you tell them you suspected it was broken?
It's quite hard to tell just by looking...

I had raised the possibility
Although I wasn't sure as I'd never broken anything before, so didn't really have a frame of reference

But did it just start hurting
or had it had some kind of trauma that could have broke it, like "shit! I've dropped that massive paving slab on my foot and I might have broken it".

I can't remember..
No one believed me when I said this, but I honestly couldn't remember doing anything to it. I just woke up one morning and it hurt.
And I wasn't pissed the night before, either, which would at least have helped to explain things. I'd gone out for a quiet couple of pints with a mate, walked home feeling fine, and gone to bed.
The fact that I couldn't identify how it had happened did, to be fair, probably contribute to their not considering a break as a hypothesis.
