I always do mine myself.
It helps if, as soon as the first twinges of pain appear, you soak your foot in a bath of hot salty water (as hot as you can bear it) as often as possible - so every hour once you get home from work. When doing the "digging", I tend to swab it with TCP every 5 mins as well, to allow the sterile solution to get into the freshly-excavated flesh.
