How nerdy are you?
This week Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, died. A whole generation of pasty dice-obsessed nerds owes him big time. Me included.
So, in his honour, how nerdy were you? Are you still sunlight-averse? What are the sad little things you do that nobody else understands?
As an example, a B3ta regular who shall remain nameless told us, "I spent an entire school summer holiday getting my BBC Model B computer to produce filthy stories from an extensive database of names, nouns, adjectives, stock phrases and deviant sexual practices. It revolutionised the porn magazine dirty letter writing industry for ever.
Revel in your own nerdiness.

Nerd!
I can:
quote Star Wars (original trilogy, none the crap new ones) verbatim. I also used to know everything by Monty Python off by heart.
I have my own "scale of plausability" for when I'm watching '24'.
I have a "scale of implausability" for when watching 'Lost'.
I know modes inside out (but I used to specialise in singing early music, so that's par for the course).
I've played the Star Wars Lego Game on PS2 3 times, and am still not tired of it. I also play 'Ico' to revel in the beauty of its design.
I am slowly but surely building up a collection of recordings of the singers Kathleen Ferrier and Janet Baker, and have CDs of almost everything that Benjamin Britten composed (where it's been recorded). Including some rare LPs of his Church Parables.
When I was young, my favorite thing ever was to help my (equally nerdy) older brother paint his D+D figures. He no longer does this, but I still do!
Erm, there are lots more that I can't think of.

Hmmm
There is no such thing as too much Britten. He's only a recent discovery, but one day I will own everything he's done, too.
Him, Pärt and MA Turnage.

I demand to know your scales of imlausability/plausability
so that I may compare it to my "Nonsense scale" that I reserve for CSI.

Colonel D:
I'll dig it out. They're scales from 1 to 10, and every time something implausible happens (in 24), you tick the box and write the event down.
In the case of Lost, you tick the box every time something happens that makes any amount of sense, and write it down.

What's your favourite Baker?
It's hard to beat the Elgar 'Sea Pictures', in my view.

Janet Baker
So far I have 2 favorite records: both on the label BBC Legends.
The first is taken from 3 live gigs she did at the RFH. 'Poeme de l'amour et de la mer' by Chausson, 'Les nuits d'ete' by Berlioz, and 'Gurrelieder' by Schoenberg.
The other is a live recording from Aldeburgh in 1971: Monteverdi, Gratiani, Barringcloe, HUmfrey, Purcell, Schubert, Faure, Gounod and Handel. There's a bonus track of an interview with her from 1969 for Radio 3.
I also have a recording of her singing Kindertotenlieder by Mahler (can't remember the label/year), which is phenomenal. There's recording of her singing Alceste coming out in a month from the Royal Opera House heritage series - it's exciting, as she never did a studio recording of it. REally looking forwarad to it!
She's a complete heroine of mine, and has really inspired me to be a singer; even though my voice is actually far more similar to Kathleen Ferrier's (a rich, rolling contralto, wheras Baker has lighter elements to her voice).

The CSI Nonsense scale is a brilliant idea.
I am a forensic scientist. If you ever want to see someone get angry, tell one of my humourless colleagues that you watch CSI for the realism, not the story.

Spring Symphony is ace!
I sang on a recording back in the day with Andre Previn & the LSO. Happy days!

I used to have a Baker Nuits d'ete
but I think I left it with an ex-gf who was learning the piece. Now I have Regine Crespin, who's pretty ace.
Misspiggy: I have that recording.
