This is a question How nerdy are you?

This week Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, died. A whole generation of pasty dice-obsessed nerds owes him big time. Me included.

So, in his honour, how nerdy were you? Are you still sunlight-averse? What are the sad little things you do that nobody else understands?

As an example, a B3ta regular who shall remain nameless told us, "I spent an entire school summer holiday getting my BBC Model B computer to produce filthy stories from an extensive database of names, nouns, adjectives, stock phrases and deviant sexual practices. It revolutionised the porn magazine dirty letter writing industry for ever.

Revel in your own nerdiness.

I am quite technical
and often pedantic, i work in computers, i've used them every day for several hours a day since 1980, i'm never far from one and everyone I know considers me an 'expert'. Its true that pretty much any problem you throw my way I'll fix it - technical or not. I'm just quite logical and can figure most things out. The world is a relatively simple place to figure out most of the time. I am quite nerdy I suppose.

However, I dont really get many of the current nerd/geek things.

Star Trek. Honestly? Really? Its fucking drivel. Only surpassed (at about 2000 mph) by Star Wars. Christ, thats toss. Seriously, pointy headed aliens? Fuck off... Apples iphone. Piss poor. Stupidly expensive - who the fuck have you ever met that uses O2 for chrissakes? Find ONE advantage I agree with that it has over my Nokia 6310 and I'll go out and buy one that instant. Ipods. Grr. Had a 3G model (40GB) for years, beautiful perfect machine. It died recently and I replaced it with a classic 160GB thing. Useless fucking doorwedge. Every single little feature has a 0.2 second delay built into it, the response of it is precisely SHIT, the wheel is shit, coverflow is shit? Coverflow? Who the fuck would ever use that? And the total motherfucking CUNT at Apple who thought they should add DRM to the Video out? You utter cunt. May your family rot with cancer. Try and fob me off with a £45 cable when the previous model would work with a £2 jobbie from maplins. You money grabbing theiving little fuckers. Vista? Fuck off. Cars? All shit. And expensive.

There is not one gadget anymore, not one thing, nothing, nada, that doesnt piss me off in some way. Look at the barrage of new things coming out - just browse the mags, websites etc and look at every phone, computer, toy, gadget etc - they are all shit in some way.

What ever happened to quality? And the first person who says 'macbook'? Fuck off.

For those that care, I find 3 things on this planet worthy of the status of'perfect'.

1. My Nokia 6310i phone.
2. Netapp filers. (very expensive SAN devices but they make me smile, they're brilliant and thats a rare thing in this age in IT).
3. X-Box Media Centre (XBMC). Isnt it sad that the most perfect way of watching TV is totally illegal at every level - from downloading it to watching it on my illegally modified xbox.

So yes I am nerdy, and I have high standards. Stuff really should work these days. It makes me really angry that mostly, its all shit.

Oh and computers (all of them)? Shit. Still.

Its 2008 for chrissakes. They should be good now.

Here here!
I think I have... erm 4 XBox's all running XBMC. Oh, and another one of em runs my Jamma arcade machine.

Nokia 6310i
Totally agree mate. Best phone ever made.

Sadly I gave in to peer pressure and got a phone with a colour screen and a camera. It's not as good in terms of its core functionality - making calls. And it's just a normal one (6230i) without any of the fancy crap that people seem to want now.

And don't get me started on the stuff which comes with cars - automatic lights and wipers, electric seats, digital displays et al. I don't want any of that, but it's difficult to buy a car with a decent engine which doesn't come as a high spec model with all the shite.

Nokia
Agree that the 6310i is without doubt the best phone ever made for doing phone stuff. However I am on O2. Sorry.

If it's the normal phono video cable for iPod...
...it's not DRM- they just wired the "official" one differently so that ordinary ones wouldn't work. Try plugging them in differently.

If it's some HD connection, then it's probably DRM. Oh well.

Too, too true
I remember the days (adjusts pullover, inhales pipe, looks smug) when 32Mbyte was a respectable size for a hard disc.
Computing power pretty much doubles every 18 months (Moore's law). So why the hell I should *ever* wait for my computer to do something is beyond me.
Vista and Office 2007 - they are both sh*te. And yes, I am running SP1. Using a database in Access 2007 yesterday, trying to re-size fields, it wouldn't let me. Out of memory. On a 2 Gig machine. 2 Gig for the love of God - an unthinkable amount. Damn sure on a 386 running Access 2 it would have let me do that. But not on a machine that's theoretically hundreds of times faster, on a software release that should also be BETTER not PRETTIER.
I love computers - as they give me my income - but by Christ they should be so much better now than they are.

John barnes
John Barnes - *snort* if that really is your name, sit back and i shall explain.

Its perfect because it does everything it should and it does it well. It has no fancy things on it, it is a phone and not much else. It takes minimal effort to make/recieve a call or send/recieve a text. It was cheap, the battery lasts for 10 days - easily (nothing else in the world comes close). It takes a half an hour to charge (on the occasional time i hop in the car, i dont own a normal charger for it), I am clumsy - i have dropped this phone every day for about 6 years and bar a few scratches its never failed me.

I got a sparky new N95 a while back - lasted me a week - a) cos i dropped it and it broke and b) my missus said the change in my stress levels was extraordinary that week, when i went back to the trusty 6310, i went back to normal.

All my opinions are applicable to me of course. YMMV. However, my friends and colleagues are always surprised that i dont have the latest things and i have the piss taken out of me a lot. The truth is I think they're all morons for buying and using things because of hype. Almost everyone I meet and talk to about their latest "thing" says 'oh its a piece of shit'. People it seems are desensitised/trained in to accepting sub standard crap these days.

The same can be applied to lots of things. A friend came up to me and said "I just got a new contract on my phone, only £45 a month'. £45 a month? what? I didnt pay that in 1991 when I got my first mobile/brick.

Oh and while we're on about it. Why the fuck do we pay for text messaging? 10p? Do people actually thing it costs the telcos anything approaching 10p to send or recieve a text? Jesus the cost is probably 1/100000th of that. What a scam.

Nah
3310 was surely better? Same sort of tech level, but smaller (still decent sized keypads), more compact, and could get run over by a car and keep on working as perfectly as the day it was bought. Once you'd replaced the case( a 10 second job and not a Torx in sight!), anyway.

Agrees with uberdeity;
My 3310 does exactly what it's supposed to, none of this colour screen, camera, music bollocks. I went for Orange's free phone for a £20 topup 'offer', but when I discovered the phone on offer doesn't do an alarm with the phone switched off, back it went. I need an alarm to get up, I don't see why I have to leave the bloody phone switched on all night.

Well...
I am not going to agree or disagree with your comments. But I think you need to control your anger in some way. Try getting some goldfish and breathe deeply.
