The truth fairy
I certainly didn't get so drunk a couple of nights ago that I stumbled into bed without remembering to retrieve my daughter's tooth from under her pillow and replace it with a shiny coin "from the tooth fairy".
I also didn't panic when her little face fell in the morning, and quickly make up some story about fairies being on Fairy Time, which is different from our time, so that I could make the switch while she was having breakfast.
Oh, sorry for any readers who didn't know that it was your parents all along. Spoilers!

As this story involves a child,
I feel duty bound to call you a nonce, but I can't justify it.

I did something very similar....
When faced with a weeping daughter the next morning clutching an uncollected tooth I explained that the tooth fairy was very busy and couldn't get to everyone on some nights.
I then explained further that this was shoddy service on the part of the tooth fairy and she should really expect compensation. She was pleasantly surprised to find the next morning that the tooth fairy had paid more for her tooth than usual.
I therefore managed to keep her childhood fantasies alive and teach a lesson in consumerism at the same time.... HOWZAT!
