This is a question Old stuff I still know

Our Ginger Fuhrer says that he could still code up a simple game idea in Amstrad Basic, while I'm your man if you ever need to rebuild the suspension on an Austin Allegro (1750 Equipe version). This stuff doesn't leave your mind - tell us about obsolete talents you still have.

Phone numbers? With letters in them?
What devilry is this? (America?)

2 = ABC
3 = DEF
4 = GHI
5 = JKL
6 = MNO
7 = PQRS
8 = TUV
9 = WXYZ

i.e. Derby = 01DE2 = 01332

Surely this doesn't apply in all cases then - Newcastle doesn't start with an X, Y or Z for example, unless the southern types who devised this were looking at maps with a 'X' and 'Here be Dragons' written on them...

Presumably 9 is WXZY so 01942 is WIlmslow? Quite a good system in some ways!

I'm pretty sure that Wilmslow
is 01625

Put it down to being Friday... 01625 is Macc. I was thinking 01925 and got mixed up... 01942 is Wigan so at least that one works...

I am fairly sure
this doesn't work in far more instances than it does work actually.

you're right, most cities work though.

That's quite beautiful
I'm having that
(, Fri 1 Jul 2011, 13:47, closed)
Is this
Actually any easier to remember?

You still have to know how many of the letters there are, that's not consistent, then the arbitrary last number.

Nope!
