Dial-up PTSDI used to do intarweb dial-up tech support. I can still hear a modem connection and tell from it precisely what's wrong with your phone line. After I stop curling up under the desk and sobbing uncontrollably. INCOMING!!!

Is that just recognising from previous cases or can you work it out?Can you tell what's wrong by listening to which tones in the handshake don't work then deducing what would cause that change in impedance?
