One step awayWhat you really want comes one step further along the tech tree with Invention - Leonardo's Workshop. Automatic upgrades for all your units until tanks come along. Saves loads of production time/upgrade cost for your entire empire and allows you to blitzkrieg the opposition with an army of top quality units the moment you unlock the requisite technology.
Happy times. I got to the point in Civ II of being able to beat the Deity level (although only occasionally, and with the right starting conditions) and have moved on to Civ IV.
