I'm paranoid about injuring my knees since I twisted one while surfing. Fucking agony and twinged for ages. I know a surprisingly large number of people who have had to have knee surgery after injuring it just playing sport or something.

My left knee's weaker because I broke my leg a few years back
Hence I cycle and occasionally swim because of zero impact.

gyms are usually fine
there's nothing there that is high enough impact to damage your knees really

doesn't change the fact that gyms are fucking awful, though.

Particularly as I have no interest in being toned and musclebound. I can get my fitness just as easily and considerably cheaper elsewhere.
