I've been to Berlin a few times but I've only stayed in one hotel thereit's called Hotel Pension Galerie (http://www.hotel-pension-galerie.de/html/home.html) and it's really close to Checkpoint Charlie. It was clean, fairly cheap, run by a nice lady called Angelika, and in the hall outside the rooms there were fridges stocked with a range of nice beers which you could help yourself to and pay for later on an honour system.
