Not really.
If I was going to talk about something, I'd make sure I knew what I was talking about first.

However, with something like sport, I'm not interested in it, therefore I'm unlikely to talk about it, therefore I don't read things about it.

I'd say there's holes in your general knowledge that you could drive a bus through, invariably this would present in a general conversation.
'Looking it up' during the course of such an event wouldn't be an option.
