To be fair I reckon I've only played it for a grand total of about an hour. I haven't played the other two so have no idea what's going on, which doesn't help.

No that really doesn't helpPlay the second one before brotherhood at least, even if you don't play the first (but then you miss out on the over-arcing plot).
