He actually made a name as a performer before he started writing his own songs
I think the reason he was successful there was that he was a folk singer, and when he was starting out there were very proscribed ways to sing folk songs. It wasn't so much that he was a fantastic performer, it was that he was different.

If I 'performed' whilst straining for a massive shit it would be 'different'*...but it'd still be bollocks.
He was popular because his whiny 'protest' shit struck a chord with the early-mid 60s US college crowd who turned their noses up at electric blues or rock'n'roll performers because they weren't 'authentic'. He was seen as a God for similar reasons by the middle class CND badge-wearing proto-vegetarian student wanker crowd over here. Anyone who thinks Joan pissing Baez is anything other than a tedious, proselytising cunt-face should be beaten in the eyes with a claw hammer.
