My pal's band were that 'Next Big Thing' once. 5-figure advance, signed to a Virgin subsidiary, indie chart Xmas no.1 then......sod all. He's never got over it, bless him.

The more sympathetic part of me almost feels sorry for the band members* - plucked out of an obscure circuit, playing to their friends at gigs in crappy little venues and suddenly dropped into being pushed by a record company who've decided they sound trendy enough to be worth marketing, fawned over and aggrandised by such shitrags as the NME who build them up to be far more legendary figures than they're capable of being, then eventually having the horrible realisation that nobody's buying their records any more and the label have lost interest...
This is soon tempered by the thought that perhaps it's their own fault for making such ballachingly shit music in the first place.
*I won't dignify some of them by calling them "musicians."
