my brother is a pretty good artist
but he was fond of taking the piss out of that kind of thing. He did an exhibition piece called untitled. It's just an 8' square blue canvas with the word "untitled" neatly painted on it in white.

no, that's the point, you'd get it.
he did it to take the piss. Almost all of his art he exibited takes the piss. He paints what you would call "proper" pictures on commission for friends, he is a talented classical painter. But that wouldn't get you exhibited or get you a good fine art degree, because it doesn't show enough imagination or willingness to stretch artistic boundaries. In the same way you can't make waves in science by repeating what someone else has already done.
