Still places freedom of belief on a higher pedestal than basic human rights.
This isn't supported by any sort of atavistic evidence - many of the American Indian nations were arranged in a matriarchal society which is one of the reasons that the (Christian) god-fearing pioneers regarded them as savages.

I went to Cherokee North Carolina and it's pretty sad, their entire history and culture has been reduced to selling dream catchers in tourist spots.

I've met a few on my travels too.
We didn't have the word Genocide then, but it's worth remembering that the US between 1865 and 1890 committed acts of genocide far worse than the Third Reich or the Khmer Rouge.

I've always maintained the notion that fundermentalists on any side are just as bad as the other (weather it's religion, football or anything else)... and the conservative amercains are of no exception. I think your left are still righter than our boarderline right.
I love a lot about america, but I once heard the american goverment described as "The uncle who touched you up as a kid, but paid your way through collage".
