Is this your first child? I could imagine if I had a first child, I would want to create a bubble of protection, a magic spell created with good intentions....
... but it doesn't work like that, as you well know. What kind of dog is it? I'm picturing a yappy jack russel or a scotty. I can't picture a dolberman in this story. Dogs are very very maternal, much more so than a cat. Let them all play around on the floor, get dirty and all that, and I'm sure the kid would grow to love the dog.

But if you're genuinly concerned, which I've no doubt you are, how about you let the dog/kid play with each other while you're right there on the floor with the dog, that way the moment you sense the dog's getting angry (and not jokey, I mean, like it's raised heckles) _then_ you'll have a case of leaving the dog in another room.

The kid and the child could create a wonderful bond, I've not doubt you've seen the videos on YouTube of kids with dogs, some of them are quite touching.
