it does do what thalidomide was meant to do
which was treat morning sickness. Without boring you more than is strictly necessary (sorry) the original drug was a racemic mix, which is to say two compounds that are chemically identical in almost every single way but bend light different ways. The L-version was a great drug, the R-version caused genetic abnormalities. Back then we couldn't separate L and R and anyway had no idea that the R form was harmful. Now we do and we can and the L version is sold under a different name for morning sickness. Or at least it was for a while
