they were about 16 and a group I only teach once a week so they don't know not to fall for things I say
and I just mentioned them in passing thinking they would know it was a joke. The next week one of them pipes up "you know those house elephants you told us about last week? They aren't real, are they?" at which point a whole lot of others were pretty disappointed, too

it's surprising how young 16 year olds are
and they are all convinced they are grown up and know everything, so they are pretty easy to fool
