This has reminded me that I once convinced someone that road signs and SatNavs
Gave slightly different distances to London destinations because Maps were measured to that monument outside Charring Cross Station and SatNavs measured to the BT Tower.

This is why Great Portland Street is so called, because they wanted it to have the initials GPS.

With hindsight, that person was a moron for believing me.

edit: Bollocks, that particlar post isn't what reminded me, I replied to the wrong one

you might have had me, up to Great Portland Street.
Is't london measured from a stone in Trafalgar square?

Oh, I don't know.
I did actually think the bit about it being measured to Charring Cross was true, but thinking about it that's just something my Dad told me once that I never checked out.

Given that this is the man who took me womble spotting, I probably shouldn't trust him.

Was the Womble in his trousers?
Although a quick Google reveals he was probably right about Charring cross.

You are right.
And I was wrong, but for good reasons: rodcorp.typepad.com/photos/variousthings/centrelondon_mileage.html
