I think it's fair to say, when you're new to the game, you want to "play any of [your] numerous musical instruments" in private...
... I mean, until you know how to play them right, so you can hit the right note at the right time. I can see why you wouldn't want to do that infront of someone like him until you're confident at doing it. But I'm sure you would be a pleasure to watch and listen too while tooting the trumbone or twanging away the strings until you come to a grand crushendo.
