I have friends who are standup comics so to support them I've been to a few, but only open mic nights which are patchy at best.
I prefer wit to jokes and the horrible 'laddish' pissed-up heckling vibe I find excruciating.
Comments above re Gervais's limited 'range' being caused by him actually being that prick are spot on. I don't mind him that much but I don't think he's half as funny as he seems to think he is. Plus his accent grates enormously.
