You can legitimately write off an absurd amount of stuff if you're self employed though.I put part of my rent because I was using one room as an office, all my travel costs, boots, laptop, all kinds of shit that on PAYE would just be tough shit, buy it with your wages.

Yes, and all that is completely legal.and can be done without having to get into the illegal "cash jobs" scenario, either.
Knowing what I know now I'd have sacked going to Uni and learnt to be a joiner or a sparky.
