A guy I know has taken it on to the next step Proper equipment, separate ingredients, pick different hops to add, etc.
It ceases to become a cheap way of producing beer if you get obsessed with it as he has.

Well per batch doing it from ingredients is dirt cheap.But the equipment is £200-£500 so you need to make a lot of batches to get the money back.
