By selling statisticsWhat people are searching for, clicking on etc. There's big money in information like that. The whole targeted ads business came about from Google selling that information to advertisers. Facebook uses the same model, pretty much and they've only recently started advertising, so far just on their mobile apps.

The holy grail is targeted ads on your phone. Using location (a-gps and wifi ) plus your internet history and click-throughs to serve you up ads for what's nearest to you that you might be interested in.
This is why Google provides Android for free.
