I've been at my ex wife's place, I still amher grandmother is dying, she and her mum are trying to be with her as much as possible and I'm looking after my son.
on the upside we are getting on OK, but life is being busy.

Man, that sounds roughI don't know the history of your relationship of course, but I think it is very good of you to be so supportive. Not everyone would be there in that situation.
