We had these amazing books in my primary school reading list
about a boy who had a picture of a sailing ship on his wall, and at night he would go into the picture and have adventures.

I always thought it was called The Silver Ship, but vast internet searching proves me wrong.

For older kids, you can't beat Gumble's Yard - the story of a bunch of kids surviving on their wits by squatting in derelict buildings.

I still think your munchkin would like the Katie Morag books, though.
