oh man
You dreadful shit.

You're an Amis man, aren't you? I've read The Rachel Papers (alright but you can tell it's a debut novel, it doesn't always seem too steady on its feet) and Money (very funny and very impressive narrative gymnastics), so which one of his should I read next? He's a frightfully good writer.

I also have visited friends' houses as a child, though none of them were connected in any way to authors or comedians.
