... it's the phone equivolent of using IE6. They'll be very few websites that would run properly on it.

And I don't buy into that "I only use it for calls and texts" thing, he won't be able to get good bumhole pictures of his misses on it either.

and gmail will still be supported for all the bumhole needs.

Of course they will.
2.3 is on millions of phones around the world and it'll keep being on them in China, India, Africa as more budget smartphones and feature phones come out. As much as the top end of the phone market makes the money that is getting saturated. The real growth is in affordable phones in the developing world.
Hey the richest man in the world is a mexican telecoms person. They'll keep this stuff running so they can run android on the cheapest chips available so they can sell them all over the world.

You're fooling yourself, even the emerging-market's phones are more powerful.
Take a look at the lowest range nokias, for example.
