whilst this is not in any way a defence of ThatcherNo they wouldn't. The housing model thatcher introduced is pretty much a version of the "American Dream" and someone else would have done it if she hadn't.
Not that "waaah someone else would have done it anyway" is a defence of course. But it's pointless to speculate that part of UK life would be any different had Thatcher not existed.
Plus, the whole "every fucking idiot living in the SE of England" thing as well.

It really is nothing short of solid economic concreteto have a stratospherically over-inflated housing market in one part of a country driven only by demand, absolutely. Especially when that demand is based purely on local employment, and huge fractions of that employment are based on totally intangible fairy dust.
That's definitely the epitome of stable economic growth, that. There's no chance of that completely collapsing in the future.
Oh, wait, yeah, that other thing.
