Yes, yes he did.
He plots well, but his characters are desperately unlikeable and the writing itself is smug. It's all deeply shallow- good on the surface but it doesn't really stand up too well when you open the bonnet.
I've only read a few short stories from his SF stuff so can't really comment, but I've read loads of his mainstream stuff. I went through a period of liking him when I was 17, read several of his books and realised that he isn't actually that good.
