It's fucking terrifying - yet so amazing that once you've regained your composure you want to do it again. Just not right away. Part of the enjoyment of it comes afterwards when the relief that it isn't permanent kicks in.

When I was into stuff like that I always wanted to to try mescaline*
acid, micro dots and mushrooms gave you an altered perception but never that propper trip that films/book seem to depict

Mescaline is basically mushrooms - DMT or ayahuasca is what you want.
