Meh, electricians like that won't touch anything that isn't up to current regs.The kitchen fitters at my place wouldn't touch it until it had been rewired. Which, of course, they were strangely happy to do for the bargain sum of £2K.
Doesn't necessarily mean that you'll die. Earthing through pipes is arguably just as safe as an earth wire. Safer in some cases.
