But a wise course of action would be to put £11,520 in a stocks and shares ISA and the rest in an OEIC in a range of funds in line with your attitude to risk. Don't wait too long to buy a flat though, property has bounced back and is forecast to do 4% a year at least over the next few years and 42% by 2020.

A properly diversified S&S portfolio has fixed interest and property funds, higher risk than cash but better returns. Choose about 12 funds, no more than 15% of the investment in overseas equities, 20% in fixed interest/property funds, rest in UK/ developed markets equities.

I want a decent compromise, I guess. I'd also only be investing it for a year or so as it's about a 20-30% deposit on a place, once I've paid off debts and bought cars.
