The French love to lol at that. Last time I was in St Malo, I ordered a salad 'sans thon parce que je suis un vegetarien', in halting French. The waiter smiled, said 'Bon! Bon!' then returned, proudly bearing the salad without the tuna but featuring glistening anchovies.

If my French was better, I would have complained.
