Sort of true
The original shotgun riders were the cowboy outriders on cattle drives from Texas to the railheads in Kansas.

The term stuck but the assumption that horse-drawn stagecoaches were the primary means of transportation in the American West is primarily drawn from Hollywood.

Sorry to be literal.
