with a larp safe crossbow once. Nearly got kick off site. Did manage it, though

You'll need a big branch
A proper longbow cross section includes heartwood and sapwood, one's better in tension, the other's better in compression (buggered if I know which is which). IIRC a longbow was made from a split stave from the tree.
