Turns out it was actually the ... testing ... brand for Technics - they'd put out their latest ideas on this brand, and if they were any good, they'd rebrand as Technics and double the price.
That's what I was told by someone believably geeky, anyway.

Panasonic own the Technics brand but don't rebadge it as far as I know.
