Christ! CAR CHAT is dull.
Some people seem to think that the highest price tag always equals the best quality.
Tell the class about something relatively cheap that you consider to be better than its higher priced equivalents.*

Alt: What would you refuse to compromise on and choose a cheaper alternative?

*Actually this sounds pretty dull and all, but whatever.

It's lovely
but it's usually preferable to have something other than drum brakes and cart suspension on a car that has an engine the size of a house.

Not as much fun though

(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:09, Reply)
The engine might be the size of a house but the specific power output (HP/Litre) is pretty shit on Yank stuff
Unless they play about with forced induction etc.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:11, Reply)
yeah, but specific power output isn't what old US cars are about, really

(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:15, Reply)
Yenko specifically had
disks installed. If I ever was lucky enough to get a low end Camaro I'd upgrade the brakes and struts first, and have modern wishbones put in before I worried about upgrading the engine.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:18, Reply)
I did not know that.
I love the look of Camaros. The Chevy dealer near me has one of the new SS droptops in. Totally would, if it wasn't utterly impractical for the UK and rudely expensive.

I have a collection of guitars
I have to say that I only have three that would be classed as 'Name' guitars - A Yamaha, an Ovation doubleneck and a Babicz*. The rest were bought because of fantastic sound & playability despite what was printed on the headstock. I've seen and played Fenders, Gibsons and Martins** that were pretty damn average - in some cases fucking awful - yet had high price tags.
Alt: Strings. Cheap strings are, by and large, shit.

*Look it up.
** generally the HPL ones - FFS why did they make these things?
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:07, Reply)
I love my Fender Stratocaster
but I played many when choosing one and some were awful and others were great. However my best sounding and playable guitar has OLP on the headstock, is called the MM1 and was £120 brand new. medias.audiofanzine.com/images/normal/olp-mm1-trans-color-511728.jpg mine is this one but unsigned by whoever the fuck that is. Who would sign an OLP? it say Ernie ball licenced it on the back of the headstock so I assume its and Officially licenced copy of the music man.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:12, Reply)
Due to my sausagefingers and lack of talent I don't play electric guitars
I've always had a sneaking suspicion that 99% of the 'sound' of an electric comes from amplification, not the guitar itself. I could be (and I probably am) wrong.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:16, Reply)
I have three electric guitars that sound distinctly different through the same amp.

(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:18, Reply)
See! Told you I could be wrong.
Could be the pickup placement/electrics pots etc in the guitar rather than the wood though.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:19, Reply)
The base you attach the strings to is bound to have an effect on the sound
although probably much less in a solid body guitar than a hollow one.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:34, Reply)
Yes it does
However, the electrics/electronics will always have a more profound effect. Having said that, playability is entirely different, a guitar that suits your hands/style/build etc will always be played more*.

*My Ovation double-neck sounds OK unplugged, much better when amplified but it's a bastard to play - too unwieldy.

I'll check tonight.
I was looking for an acoustic that wouldn't break the bank - I had a guitar expert friend of mine trail round places with me checking out all the ones I liked the look of. He told me right at the start to avoid electros as you're paying extra for the gubbins so usually the guitar is less good. Then he played this one and just said "buy that now, it's beautiful"

I had a windfall in my late teens, and blew it on an idiot stereo with all bells, whistles, lights and all the other shit.
Turns out it was actually the ... testing ... brand for Technics - they'd put out their latest ideas on this brand, and if they were any good, they'd rebrand as Technics and double the price.

That's what I was told by someone believably geeky, anyway.

Alt: "These are my principles! If you don't like them ... I have others."

Let's talk about my boy racer car then.
The loss adjuster came out to look at it the other day. He's going to decide whether it's worth repairing. He suggested writing it off and letting me keep it, plus whatever the write-off value is.

Good deal? I'm not entirely clear where I would stand with re-insuring an official write-off.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:54, Reply)
I don't know what car it is or what happened to it
It does depend on what cateory it was written off in.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:55, Reply)
It's a diesel 306.
The incident was just a slight bump: bit of a dent in the bonnet, but the car itself is cosmetically fucked, It was my first car, and it's had all the dents and hard driving you would associate with that.

The engine is far too good to scrap, though, and it's only had 80k on the clock.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:57, Reply)
If it's a Cat C or D write off, you'll have to get it inspected and MOTed once the work's been done.
You'll probably struggle to sell it on, but if you're just planning on running it until it dies, there's no real issue with it.

If it's just the bonnet, get a second hand one off ebay.
(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 11:59, Reply)
That's what I thought.

(, Thu 17 Oct 2013, 12:02, Reply)
As long as the write-off leaves it safe to drive
it makes no odds. you have to declare it to the insurance company. I assume it's a Cat D (as in uneconomical to repair rather than being "proper fucked") so you simply have to tell your insurance company, plus if you ever sell it you have to declare it.

I had a mini about 18 years ago that I tried to do that with but the company got very, very shirty about it. So if they are offering and you don't want a new car but do want some money, go for it.

Awesome.
It's only about halfway through its normal lifespan, as a diesel, so I don't really want to get rid of it. Also, I couldn't afford to replace it with anything near as good at the moment.

unless it's a beemer, merc, volvo or saab everything else on it will break around 100k though.

Missus rear ended someone once and fucked the bonnet, bumpers, radiator, wings etc
but as it was her fault the others claimed off her and she was third party only so her car was never written off. So we just replaced all the bits and put it through it MOT. Sold it 6 months later still seemed fine. Seems like your has nowhere near the damage hers did.

Shouldn't be a problem
writing off is purely a value decision, not a safety one. Long as it's repaired and passes an MOT, shouldn't be a problem.

When my printer starts up, its self-checks are identical to the first couple of bars of the Muskehounds theme.
Identical.

My radio told me I was letting it down and that I should kill more prostitutes with my hammer
The kettle agreed with it, so I guess I should do as they say.

I'd be willing to bet it's done on purpose.

The heera herbs and spices that come in packets are more flavourful and much cheaper than the schwarz glass jars.
I just got back from the opticians, the current trend in glasses is treading a very thin line between hipster and psychopathic child-botherer.

have you considered laser eye surgery?
I've never been sure whether it's the sort of thing everyone could do if they can afford it, or whether it only works for certain conditions.

Nah.
I don't mind wearing glasses. Also, I'm not sure it would work for me. My eyes didn't require glasses until about 7 years ago and they've been going downhill at a "normal" rate since.

It's supposed to be safer than contacts. Although contacts seem like too much of a faff as well.
