Harsher sentencing has very little to do with crime ratesplease see USA with the stupid 3 strike rule, increasing the length of sentences will not change the rate of conviction or reoffending. If you look the countries with the lowest recidivism rates are the Scandinavian ones where (by UK standards) the sentences are lower but with better rehab.
